Wright State Basketball SPORTING GEOGRAPHY®

The Wright State University Raider Basketball SPORTING GEOGRAPHY program is available to teachers in Dayton and surrounding counties. Each packet contains reproducible lesson plans, desk maps, and background information, to take you through the 2007-08 basketball season (January thru March '08 games).
This program is ideal for grades four through eight. Materials address National Social Studies Standards, with emphasis on History and Geography. Kit materials are free to teachers thanks to sponsorship from Wright State University Athletics and program sponsors Pepsi, The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton, and McDonald’s.

About this program's content in relation to Ohio Standards -

The lesson plan materials are designed around the five themes of geography, and align with the Ohio Department of Education Academic Content Standards for Social Studies and Geography. Below are a sampling of the Standards that are addressed in the reproducible lesson plans provided in the 2007-08 Wright State University Basketball packet:

Social Studies Benchmarks by the end of the 3-5 grade program:
B. Use a variety of sources to organize information and draw inferences.
C. Communicate social studies information using graphs or tables.

Geography Benchmarks by the end of the 3-5 grade program:
A. Use map elements or coordinates to located physical and human features of North America.
B. Identify the physical and human characteristics of places and regions in North America.
C. Identify and explains ways people have affected the physical environment of North America and analyze the positive and negative consequences.
D. Analyze ways that transportation and communication relate to patterns of settlement and economic activity.

Geography Benchmarks by the end of the 6-8 grade program:
A. Identify on a map the location of major physical and human features.
B. Define and identify regions using human and physical characteristics.
C. Explain how the environment influences the way people live in different places and the consequences of modifying the environment.
D. Explain reasons that people, products and ideas move from place to place and the effects of that movement on geographic patterns.

If you would like a visit from a Raider Coach and/or Player, please write a letter to the address listed below. 
Requests will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis within a thirty-mile radius of Dayton, Ohio.
No requests are guaranteed. Please mail your request at least 30 days before your requested date.
Because of student-athlete responsibilities in the classroom and on the basketball court, limited visits are available during the regular season. Player visits may include student-athletes from various Wright State sports teams, not just basketball.
