Bruins Icing the Globe

Bruins Icing the Globe is a curriculum packet that contains reproducible lesson plans, desk maps, and background information, to take you through 10+ weeks during the 2008-09 NHL season. This program targets geography skills and is ideal for grades 4 through 8. Materials are free to teachers thanks to sponsorship from the Boston Bruins.

About this program's content in relation to geography standards -

The lesson plan materials are designed around the five themes of geography, and align with the working draft of the Massachusetts Department of Education Social Studies Standards. Below are a sampling of the Standards that are covered in the reproducible lesson plans:

Essential Skills: (Grade 4) Mapmaking - The student will create simple maps using standard cartographic procedures. (Grades 5-8) The student will use the five themes of geography to analyze the earth surface, and the human-environmental interactions on the earth's surface.

Maps and Globes: (Grades 4-8) The student will use maps and globes to demonstrate specific and increasingly complex geographic knowledge.

Physical Features/Systems: (Grades 4-8) The student will be able to understand, identify, and locate physical features on the earth's surface.

Interconnections: (Grades 4-8) The student will be able to understand relationships between geography and culture, and how humans influence the environment and in turn are influenced by it.
